The Valley of Abundance
Nestled between the towering Mountain Ranges of the Winterhoek, Witzenburg and Saronsburg, Tulbagh has always been celebrated for the stunning beauty of its setting. A diverse flora is abundant all over the valley, with Buchu, Proteas, and Resteo growing wild in the mountains and even on the side of the road. It is a place to come to enjoy the magnificent scenery and go hiking, mountain biking, horse riding or fishing.
120 km North West of Cape Town, Tulbagh is secluded in the beautiful Breede River valley, below the peak of the Groot Winterhoek Mountain, the start of the mighty Cedarburg range. Tulbagh is also the origen start of the famous Route 62, which stretches 160 km through the valley to Montague, and then on through the Karoo to Oudtshoorn.
The ever popular Tulbagh Wine Route has become both a prominent attraction in the valley and is an important part of the Cape Wine lands. Our fifteen estates are regular reciprocates of awards from around the world. Although many cultivars are grown here, we are in ‘Shiraz country,’. A visit to Tulbagh is not complete without experiencing the fine wine estates of Twee Jonge Gezellen and Saronsburg. Tulbagh has become a favourite destination of those seeking fine wines, a laidback lifestyle and spectacular tranquillity.
Settled already in 1700, Tulbagh has a Rich History, and boasts some of the most beautiful examples of early Cape Dutch Architecture. After the devastating earthquake of 1969, Tulbagh was skilfully restored according to a surviving 1861 photograph. This event gave Church Street, 32 National monuments, and the rest was history. A stroll down Church Street gives an authentic and unique glimpse of an 18th Century Cape village.
An ideal retreat in any season. Experience the seasons in Tulbagh with snow-capped peaks in winter, wild flowers in spring, gorgeous summer days and balmy evenings in autumn.
